Difference between a dealer and an affiliate?

Can someone explain the differences between being a dealer or an affiliate? I understand their are probably more stringent requirements for being a dealer, but I'd like to know more specifics about each program and their requirements. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be much appreciated!

At the most basic level a dealer places pre-orders at a wholesale price and sells from that stock. An affiliate carries no stock and sells by referral for a very generous commission. We use ShareASale for our affiliate program.
