Hmm. It's not doing it now, even with the USB plugged in. I think I may have been getting some interference from my laptop's power cord.

Interference was what I suspected. That's why I was suggesting running it standalone as the power coming from USB is notoriously noisy and usually causes a ground loop, especially with notebook computers.
