Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
I've just received my new USB cable for the Proteus. I can't get it to communicate with my Win7 64 bit laptop. The serial-USB driver is loaded. The Proteus editor shows I am connected on COM4, and the computer does respond when I plug in the cable. However , with Proteus set to PC mode, when i hit the RUN SEGMENT button , I don't get any response from the Proteus. I haven't tried to upload or download programs yet.
I used to edit programs with the old serial adapter on my desktop with no problem, although with an older Proteus. Any assistance much appreciated.
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
You're speaking of the USB to RS-232 cable that MindPlace sells?
You've downloaded and installed the driver from this site?
With the adaptor connected, can you check in your control panel under Ports (COM and LPT) to see whether it shows a ! beside the SiLabs entry? What COM port does it show?
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Hi Andy
Yes SciLabs driver is showing loaded COM 4 in Device manager ..
and yes its the new USB cable for Proteus. Proteus in PC mode.
Its View Realtime then Run Segment that I am hitting next, but no response from machine.
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Dumb question - are you definitely connected to the AUX connector on the Proteus?
Is the connector all the way in on the Proteus?
Is the Proteus Editor showing "Port Open" in green?
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
yes, port open green and using AUX input and fresh batteries.
yes, plug all the way in.
Brightness up and glasses in correct output socket..
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Very strange indeed!
Running out of ideas...
Brightness up on the Proteus?
Do you want to try uploading a session or an OS update just to see? (Putting Proteus into dL mode first, of course)
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Just to test if its computer specific I've loaded the driver on my WIN 7 32bit desktop and same result though I had option of 3 com ports but Proteus is still not responding.
I'm a bit nervous of trying to upload a session. Can you give me quick instruction.?
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Ok I just went through process of upgrading code to V3.2. It all seemed to go fine , but when i restart the machine it still shows V2.8 !
Shouldn't DL flash or something if it is receiving data ?
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
The LED display on the Proteus should flash numbers to show that it's receiving data while you're updating the OS.
Sounds like the only thing left is that you've gotten a defective cable, I'm sorry to say. I assume you have no way to test the Proteus with the old cable?
Send me an e-mail and we'll get you a replacement.
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Yes I've got a serial card and old Proteus cable in the desktop- I'll see if I get any joy with that .
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
OK - the old serial port cable works but only on Com 7 - not on the other options of COM 1 and 8.
Going back to the USB cable , I note that when I hit buttons to start and stop segment playback although I don't get any light I get a crackle in the headphones... . Device manager says that the SciLabs device on Com 4 is working properly. It all seems to point to a faulty cable ?
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
I think you're right. Fire off an e-mail to me and we'll get it sorted out.
Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Strange, indeed... the Proteus USB cable could be used both on old and new Proteus systems, as we have not changed the hardware. The tricky thing about Proteus is that it only receives data and does not transmit it, unlike Procyon, which has standard two-way communications. So aside from identifying which port is used by the SiLabs driver and assigning that port in Proteus Editor, there is no way to monitor status--except for when lthe display flickers during data transfer. One final thing to check on your Proteus: is the middle decimal point flashing, indicating 'digital input mode'? See page 11, Proteus Manual rev 3. It could be that the adapter was squished in the mails and needs replacement as Andy suggested... thanks for your patience, Mark!

Re: Help wih getting Proteus communication with new USB cable.
Thanks Robert- we established that no Comms were happening and the Proteus coms were good on the serial card on my PC . The replacement USB adapter arrived today and works perfectly, which is great because I prefer to work on my notebook in a number of more stimulating environments than my office !
