How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
You don't need special software to create Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions. Any full featured DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is all you need. I use Reaper.
Why Reaper?
- Almost free. The 2 month trial version (full) never goes away. I had Reaper on my hard drive for a year before I took the time to learn it.
- TONS of instructional media. From the Reaper.fm site, to Reaper Mania or Reaper Blog, there is a tutorial for anything you want to do in Reaper.
- Extremely customizable. DAW's are designed for music production. I can shape Reaper to look and feel more like MWS.
Go to Reaper.fm and install Reaper. Then download and unzip the attached template. Open the .rpp file.
You will see a reference track on top. This controls Spectrastrobe signals.
Then there is the Entrainment track. Just like MWS, this is where you set your entrainment path. You will see an automation lane (called tracks in MWS) and control points (nodes) you can set to what time/ frequency you want.
Under that is the Spectrastrobe color tracks. Mix colors by using the volume slider, or set an automation by selecting the track and typing V, or click the Trim button on the TCP and check the Volume box. The volume slider on the Entrainment track will adjust over all brightness.
Then there is the Tones track. The Tone Generator installed in the FX is always on, so I have it muted upon opening. There is an automation lane to control pitch and volume along the timeline..
Notice how all 4 of these tracks are slightly indented under the Entrainment track? That is because they are in a "folder" The Entrainment track is the "parent" and controls all the tracks that are indented below it. These tracks are "children" or "slave" tracks.
Then you will see a music track that is not in the folder.
Use this template to add your own music, or do your own BWE protocol. To export it as a MP3, click File> Render and select MP3.
Take some time to familiarize yourself with Reaper. I suggest watching this series of videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bepxGZ-ZXGE
If you are using another DAW, open the zip file and find the Repeaks/ Media folder. There you will find the ultrasonic soundtracks for reference, red, green and blue. Control these with a LFO, add a tone generator and away you go. DO NOT MODULATE THE REFERENCE TRACK.
For Audiostrobe, All you need is the Green track.
This will get you started. There is a lot more things you can do, a lot more to go over. Play around with it, and let me know if you have any questions..
-
Ok, So I downloaded Reaper and your .zip file, I opened the .rpp file in reaper.
What do I need to do to have the same type of session as the .kbs I am using right now?
Because I dont know how to go about is.
I will first study the videos you mentioned to build a proper foundation.

Add control points to the Entrainment track following the entrainment path you wish along the timeline. Shift-click to add points, then you can drag the point to the frequency and time you want, or right click it and set the value. Expand the track while youre working on it to make it easier to see.
Connect your Spectrastrobe device to USB, and set your computer to use as sound output.
Hit play, and unmute the tones track. Mute the music track if you want. You should have flashing lights and pulsing tones following your entrainment path. Blend colors by adjusting the volume settings on each color. Overall brightness is adjusted using the volume of the entrainment track.
Save As to keep the template original. Click File- Render, choose where you want to store the file and what format to use. Kasina and Limina will only take WAV or MP3. Render the file, then upload into your device.

Great work---well done, Joe, and thanks much for this new method for making SpectraStrobe sessions!

Re: How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
There is so much cool stuff you can do with it. Once you understand the basics, it is really limited to your imagination, and your desire to learn more about audiovisual production with a DAW. It may seem a little overwhelming at first. Start slow and simple until you get used to it, just like any complex program

Control color mixing with the volume of the color tracks. Select the track and type V, or click the Trim button on the TCP and check the Volume box. Shift- click to add points, drag for placement, or right click to add a specific value.

Re: How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
Hello,
i replaced the Tremolo plug-in with the Cymatic LFO plug-in and wanted to produce pulses with for example 10 percent pulse width with 180 degrees phase shift (for old mindmachine freaks: the expand mode). How can you realize it? (Panning did not work because then one eyeside has the 10 percent pulse but the other eyeside is pulsing much longer).

180 degree phase shift as in each side is offset 180 deg to produce an alternating effect as in one eye full on while the other is full off?
To do that for the entire folder (all tracks indented under the Entrainment track), click FX and open the Cymatic LFO. Slide the Target slider from Volume to Panning, and set the pulse width to 10%.
To do individual tracks, on the TCP, adjacent to the FX button, you will see a 0 button with a line through it. Clicking this button turns it green and inverts the phase 180 degrees. You will need tracks for right and left, and pan them 100%
You can even do individual items in a track by double clicking to open the Item Properties window. There you will find a box to invert the phase just for that item.

Hello Joe,
thank you for the answer.
I had tried all what you wrote before. Even the waveform i had changed to pulse. Slide the LFO Target slider to panning, set pulse width to 10%.
Then i duplicated the track (green). Set the slider beneath the Volume pan slider of one track to left and the slider of the other track to right. Then one track is pulsing with 10% and the other track has 10% pause and pulses with 90%. I tried all phase inverted buttons and also
the boxes (Invert phase) in the Item Properties windows, but without any changing result.
The result should be: When the right light pulses with 10% the left light should be off. When the left light pulses with 10% the right light should be off.

Sorry for the confusion. I posted 3 different ways to accomplish the same goal. Using the Cymatic plugin, you only need one track. I assume you are using Audiostrobe. Set the plugin to panning at 10% DS. You only need the green light track, delete or mute the rest. It should give you the result you are looking for.

Hello Joe,
sorry, but this way was the first one i tried that failed.
Again: One track (green), Plug-In setting: waveform: pulse, LFO Target: panning, Pulse Width: 10%
Result: Left channel: 10% pulse 90% pause, Right channel: 90% pulse 10% pause
Imagine you pulse with 50% at each side but alternate -> right side on, left side off (this is the only way what is realizeable with panning and pulse width 50%)
Now you want instead of 50% pulse only 10% pulse. So it should be: left side 10% pulse 90% off, right side 100 % off. Then left side 100 % off, right side 10% pulse 90% off.
This function is important because when you reduce the pulse width at higher frequencies you can better perceive the pulses than when you pulse with 50% pulse width.

Here is a template. Note that for Audiostrobe, you must balance the output volume of your player to the brightness adjustment on your AVE device.

Hello Joe,
thank you for the template, but the result with this is the same as before.
With waveforms: sine, square, saw it pulses 50% pulse width regardless what you set in pulse width.
Only with waveform pulse the pulse width 10% is realized.
But ..... with left side: 10% pulse 90% pause (that is ok) right side: 90% pulse 10% pause (that is not ok)

You are right. Using the Cymatic plugin I see no difference in duty cycle no matter what pulse width I set unless I choose the Pulse waveform. I also see irregularities in the right and left channels. Cymatic is developing a new plugin, maybe that won't be a problem with it. You should be able to use the Pulse waveform on 2 tracks, pan one to the right and the other to the left, and offset one by 180 degrees. When I get a chance I will check it out.

Hello Joe,
Here what i posted (#9):
"Even the waveform i had changed to pulse. Slide the LFO Target slider to panning, set pulse width to 10%.

(Even when i slide the LFO Target slider to volume it doesn't work)
Is there another way to offset one track by 180 degrees other than click invert phase (what didn't work)?

Re: How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
OK I'll have to play around to see how the best way to do it. It may be the plugin. I didn't try the JS LFO because you can't adjust the waveform. This is what I did:
Create a track. Put on a tone generator, followed by the Cymatic LFO set to pulse at 10%. Create midi item by holding Ctrl and dragging across the timeline. Right click on it and choose Apply FX as New Take. Then copy it and move to another track (Ctrl-Drag). Zoom in until you can see the waveforms. Drag one track until the pulse is offset 180 deg. Then Pan one to the right and one to the left. Double click the item to get Item Properties, and pan to the right or left respectively. I did it with tones, but it should work using the green track as well.

I found this free LFO plugin that may be a better alternative. I haven't had a chance to learn how to use it in anticipation of the new Cymatic plugin. https://www.noiseash.com/action-tremolo/

About the theta-gamma session, yes if that is what you are asking. I am contemplating doing a video tutorial soon. It will give me an opportunity to explore the video editing capabilities of Reaper. What you are doing is entirely possible to construct with Reaper. If you’re stuck, maybe we can arrange a Skype or Zoom call and I will walk you through it.
General rule of thumb for ramps is 1 Hz +- per minute. There is some debate if ramps are really needed at all as the brain will eventually entrain to a steady stimulus. Sudden large jumps in frequency can be jarring and might jerk you out of a theta state, so short ramps are needed for that regard. Advanced users can reduce ramp times to allow more time in the targeted frequency.

Hello Joe,
thank you for your tip here.
Ok maybe this can be function in some cases. But in many cases if you want to change the pulse width ( for example in a ramp) or want to
change to an exact pulse width value (for example 27%) it would be very difficult (or impossible ?) to realise it with dragging the track.
So can you please ask cymatic (if you can contact him), if he can integrate the pulse width in alternate mode in his new plug-in?
Thank you.

I experimented a little bit with it, but here also it is not possible to realise the pulse width in alternate mode in a decent manner.
(Therefore it has to offer some other goodies, for example you can form your own waveform very quickly etc.)

Well, you can still create your pulse width in pulse mode, duplicate it, and offset it 180 deg while panning each right and left. I will check with the Cymatic dudes and see what their new plugin can do for that.

Hello Joe, any chance of that video tutorial coming through? There are no decent editors anymore. Thanks for your efforts.
Edit: also reaper file doesnt work, cymatic plugin doesnt exist.

The Zip file for the Reaper file still works, and I was able to still download the Cymatic plugin. You can still create sessions without the plugin, but it does make it easier and has helpful features and functions specfic to AVS. A new and (greatly!) improved plugin is in the works.
I will put together a video soon, if you don't mind a rough draft.

Re: How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
I downloaded Reaper, and your template, and finally after a lot of experimentation I got it up and running and I can now at least create Audiostrobe sessions, however the problem I am having is that to a achieve a visible Audiostrobe session my gain levels really have to be quite high, so high infact that it creates serious audible feedback, and the audio track is lost underneath it all. I have tried every thing I can think off to reduce this so that I still still get a visual output, I have turned my PC's mike off, constantly adjusted track levels, etc, etc, but all to no avail!
I am very new to all of this and realise I am probably making some really stupid mistake, so please any suggestions!

You are almost there!
The volume level coming out of the Tone Generator is much too high. You must turn the volume way low. A better way to do it is to double click the Media Item to open Media Item Properties. Halfway down you will see Volume/ Pan. 100% volume setting in Reaper is 0.00db. Set that to -12db, click apply, and you will have a good volume range. That or create your light media items with the Cymatic plugin.
To create SS from there, create Red and Blue tracks the same as Green. Put them in a folder (tracks will be indented) with the parent track containing a LFO in FX. Create your reference track and set it the same -12db. DO NOT MODULATE THIS TRACK. Put it on the very top as Track 1, stretch it to the full length of the session and forget about it.
Adjust volume levels of the RGB to create different colors.
-
Re: How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
Once you create Media Items the correct volume level, create a folder on your computer and name it something like "Entrainment Tones." Copy and paste the RGB and Ref items from reaper into the file. For future sessions, copy or drag the files from the file into your session. Make sure you name the Media Item and it will name the track appropriately. I also save tones in pitch frequencies I use often, like Solfeggio frequencies.

You are in luck! I'm putting together a tutorial webinar. I'm working on a website, when I get it up and running I will make a formal announcement. I'm hoping to do a preliminary "dress rehearsal" after Christmas. I customized Reaper even more for creating brainwave entrainment sessions. I was reluctant to do so earlier, but new improvements that came with Reaper 7 made it possible to revert to the original menus and toolbars with a click.
Hope you can make it. This new template is much more streamlined, and customized so you don't have to be a musician or a sound engineer to use.

Re: How to Produce Spectrastrobe and Audiostrobe sessions with a DAW
After creating a session with Reaper, I'd like to play my customised sounds and light effects with Kasina. Typically, this can be done by connecting a USB cable to the device. However, since I use Kasina to enhance sleep quality, it may seem inconvenient to have a cable connected for the entire duration, which can be up to 30 minutes. I'm looking for alternative methods: writing the session to the device via cable and then disconnecting it to solely play the lighting effects. Does anyone have any ideas?

Just render the session to mp3 format, then copy the file to the micro-SD card.

You can certainly access deep relaxation, deep meditation and such type altered states. This is what most of us are doing for our own self-therapy. As for exploring the astral realms......ahhh.....I wouldn't think so.
