Problem updating FW on Kasina
I was attempting to update the firmware and I followed the instructions posted on your site. I held down the middle button (the center one) while Kasina was off and turned it back on. All it did was turning on the regular 4-panel screen. If I keep holding the power button it shuts off again.
I tried this with both Mac and windows with no success. What am I doing wrong? Also my Kasina looks a little different from what's in your diagram. It looks like you have 3 circles and mine only has 2 (an outer and inner button).
I did connect my Kasina to my computer through the USB cable that shipped with the unit. Could there be something wrong with the cable?

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
One more thing I want to mention, the cable I received does't completely insert into the Kasina port. I haven't had a problem charging it through the wall charger which is what I have been doing. However, I just noticed that it is not charging when I connect the cable to my computer.
-
Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
If it is charging with the wall adapter then that says the cable should be fine. Are you plugging into a hub or directly into the computer? Does the Kasina SD 'drive' show up on your computer? If so, then it is loading ok and the cable is verified to work. If not, then is it a problem with the USB port or hub? Try another port.
Otherwise, the firmware update screen does require a USB connection to show up.
Check these things and report back.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
I was plugged into a laptop. This is weird. I tried it again after seeing your message and at first it didn't respond, I unplugged and replugged a few times and all of a sudden it is working. It just would not work this afternoon. Not sure what went wrong, at least it is resolved now.
I was able to update the firmware, but only to 1.03. How do I access 1.04?
Thank you for your help!

Where did you find 1.03?
1.04 is downloadable from here.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
I was using Mac Mountain Lion and I discovered that every time I copied the new firmware to Kasina it kept on reverting back to 1.03 when I powered off and powered on again. So I thought I had 1.03. This kept on happening even though it seemed I was able to copy the new file over to Kasina OK (the file date in the folder was updated when I did a copy). I then read the instruction saying to use command line. I tried it and got an error message.
Fortunately I have bootcamp on my computer and I switched to windows and the installation worked without glitch. Sigh.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
On Mac, from the Finder it does not always work. We don't know why. That is why I have set it up by command line, which does work. I have tried it up to Mavericks. I will make a utility to do this.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
I know you got it to work but I would like to test a long term solution for the Mac if you don't mind.
Here is a firmware update utility for Mac. I have tested it on Mavericks and Snow Leopard and it works for me. Please test it on your Mac. You might have to roll back to an older firmware with the utility for testing and then once again install the new one. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to tell if anything updated (besides error messages) For others, I will roll this code into the Kasina Basic Editor.
-
Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
I don't know how to roll back to an older firmware because I have deleted it. I tested the utility without rolling back and it seemed to operate as expected.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
There is a check in place if the copy over fails. So if it ran through the whole process and ejected the mounted bootloader drive, then it worked. You just wouldn't have seen a change in the FW number. I can pull up an older and post it, if you wanted to do that test. Otherwise, we can get a bigger sample when the editor update is released.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Right, it did go through the whole process you mentioned and said it was successful. When I tried to do a copy the second time it would not let me. So I assumed there was some type of record registered somewhere.
It is a nice utility with easy to understand interface, thanks for making it. I think I am ok to wait for the next update. :-)

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Hi. Just got my Kasina today and my iMac refused to update it to 1.04. I haven't messed with Terminal.
Using my laptop on Win7 64bits the firmware update was flawless.
Great product so far I am impressed.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Michel,
The firmware update utility attached higher in this thread didn't work? Or you were just following the posted instructions? The Mac it seems will need the firmware utility as we get more reports of inability to update with the the Finder.
Glad you are liking the Kasina.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
I haven't tried the firmware update utility for MAC OS yet, I will next time on next firmware version for Kasina, using the Mac OS X Yosemite beta (10.10) available as of today.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Did the update work for someone with MAC OS Mavericks 10.9.4? I tried to update, but when plugging into USB the new "KASINA AVS" volume is not displayed. Firmware Kasina: KasinaFW1.02 (the USB Cable works, as it displays on the Kasina to be connected with USB). Can someone help or is the Kasina damaged, as i didn't use it for some month (everything else works, just the connection to my iMac/Macbook does not work). Thank you for any help...

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Yes, it works on Mavericks, even Yosemite. Did you hold down the middle navigation button at the same time as turning the Kasina on with the power button? That is what puts it into the firmware bootloader mode.
Also, you will probably want to try the beta firmware loader utility for Mac linked earlier in this thread.
Please report back your results.
Best,
Scott

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Yes, if have done everything like described - but my Macs does not display the Kasina as Volume. Charging works without any problems, also everything else works with the Kasina...

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
The USB-Port of the Kasina seems to have a loose contact and the update to 1.11 did work with the Terminal (while updating with the firmware loader utility and/or replacing firmware.bin didn't work)...
-
Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
The firmware utility runs the Terminal commands, so we may assume that the USB connection is intermittent? That is if you got no errors with the utility.
Possibly the USB cable? Can you verify if another cable works? You could also eliminate the cable as an issue by connecting normally through USB on the Kasina using the USB menu item. In which case the SD card would mount named Kasina SD.
It could potentially be the USB jack on the unit but I would first suspect the cable as mentioned. Again the SD card mounted would reveal this case as well.
BTW, the Kasina won't go into Bootloader mode at all if there is no USB connection, that is the reason to check with the card. Also, the Mac will pop up a message about the drive being improperly ejected if it loses the connection.
It is good that you got the firmware updated but let's focus on the USB issue you are reporting.
Thanks,
Scott

omg, it works again!
first of all, i can confirm that update is not possible with third party cable (this is not good because we need to take care of original cable now)
second - update is not works on Mavericks even with original cable. i was able to mount Kasina, delete original firmware and copy new firmware. but then device became unresponsible. and only way to recover it was to use updater utility.
i think all of this must be covered in info section about firmware update.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
The core functions are in a protected memory space so any firmware update should not prevent the Kasina from functioning. The update would simply be unsuccessful. At least that is the plan.
The manual updates have been in progress over the last few weeks. I don't know if they will make it to other languages any time soon.
USB cables are rated differently for power and data.

Not true. The USB cable included with the Kasina is a very standard USB-A to Mini-USB-B cable. There is nothing special about it. That being said, there's no guarantee that a 3rd party cable will work as some are made with less-than-good tolerances. We included a good cable so that you wouldn't have problems, but I have updated my firmware with many different cables I have lying around and it's been fine. Again, though, I have found cheap cables in the past that would not work with my external hard drives and things. You should definitely make sure you always buy verified cables if possible.

I know there are some issues with updates on Mac. Interestingly, it's flawless on Windows. We are definitely looking at ways to make the firmware updating on Mac as flawless as on Windows.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
So, the firmware update utility did work for you on Mavericks? Man, a lot of Mac users lately which is good (Mac is my primary platform too). Mac has a tendency to create all kinds of hidden metadata files that pollute drives. This has to be at least part of the problems when coming from the Finder. Another microcontroller platform I use has the exact same issues with firmware updates on Mac.

Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
I didn't say there was anything special about our cable, just that there are USB cables with different ratings.
-
Re: Problem updating FW on Kasina
Actually charge and data are pin connections so if the Mac recognized and mounted the Kasina then it is a data cable but maybe not a good one. Hard to say.

third party cable was not completely noname. it was supplied with bluetooth speaker and i used it many times with different devices. do not know why it can't work with Kasina.
