Question I think My Proteus needs repair

I have a 60 hz hum and I stopped using the device some time ago.
Should I load new os or where can I just check to see if it is working OK.
Would like to get it working again.
The Hum makes me not use the device.
    ??
    Any Ideas??:

If you're sure it's a 60Hz hum, it's unlikely to be a faulty Proteus, and reloading the OS is unlikely to help - it's almost certainly a mains interference problem.

Are you using it with an AC adaptor? If so, does the problem still exist if you use batteries. If the problem goes away, and the Proteus isn't connected to anything else, this would suggest that the adaptor is faulty.

Are you also using it with audio connected to an AC powered device, such as a laptop or CD player? If so, does the hum go away when you unplug the device. If the hum goes away you may have an earth loop.

Earth loops are common when connecting two AC powered audio devices. There are isolation devices that can be placed in the audio connection, but the easiest option is to power at least one of the devices with batteries.

Another source of 60Hz noise is a faulty audio cable plugged into the Aux socket. Does the hum go away when nothing is plugged into the Aux?

    Cheers,
    Craig

Its seems Craig that the hum might be higher than 60hz. I will just call it a hum for now.
I have volume down and still hums but not as loud. The hum changes a bit when I change sessions. The hums pulses between two hums when i start a session.
It seems to pulse with the dots on the screen.
    Using batteries only.
Changed headset to another from my mp3 player.
Pulled lights out and does same thing.

Using os 2.3 and tried to update it a year or so ago and that is when I think I started to have all the trouble.
The hum is so loud that I can not use the device.
    Help is needed.

Craig Just another note -- It seems that the left side does not produce any sound only the hum when the display is lit.
When display is off no sound at all on left side.
    Hope this can help

That does begin to sound a bit more like a Proteus problem.

Andy (MindPlace tech support) will have read this and will probably send you a private message.

    Cheers,
    Craig

    Hi Daryl;

Please try running the Proteus with BRAND NEW Alkaline batteries, or better yet, using the Proteus AC adapter.

I'm not sure if you know this already, but if you press the Select key while a session is running, it turns off the LED display which sometimes can cause a little clicking in the audio.

I don't suppose you've mistakenly plugged the headphones into the lightframe socket on the Proteus? It's easy to do and would produce only clicks and buzzes.

Does it make the exact same frequency of sound on all programs?

Let us know what you find and we'll get this solved.

    -Andy.

    Hello Andy
I have brand new rayovac alkaline batteries. Still HUM

Used the Proteus AC adapter without batteries. Less HUM

Yes I know you can turn off the LED display. The HUM does go away with the LED display turned off. But still no Left audio channel.

I used the over 6 months, I should know which socket does which.

If we are talking about the background hum. It does change when selecting the session. Changes when start the session and hum pulses with the timing of the LED display dots that pulses.

The sounds on the right side seems fine when the led display is off.

ANY tests modes to check the left audio side.
I did try to change the OS a long time again.
    Thanks
    Daryl

    Sorry Daryl;

I don't mean to imply that you don't know how to use the product - it's just I've seen so many silly things be the cause of major problems. I always have to ask the simple stuff first.

You say the problem started when you updated the OS. Have you updated the OS to the latest to see if that fixes the problem?

If you have the latest OS, and you've tried other headphones, then it really seems like you need to get the product repaired. It may still be under warranty. Send me a PM (Private message) with info on when you purchased it and where and I can let you know your warranty status.

    -Andy.

There are a lot of things (maybe silly) that I need to learn about the Proteus and I am happy that your helping.
Iam using OS2.3 and will try to update to OS2.8.
I bought the Proteus back in Dec. 2006 and about 6 months I think I started having the troubles with the Hum after loading OS 2.3 and just stopped using it.
Get back to you after loading new OS.
    Thanks
    Daryl
