    Default How Our Mind Works

    How Our Mind Works

v 95% of our brain is run by the subconscious (s/c) which operates like a computer program and does exactly what it’s programmed to do. Some of these programs came with our body. Programs such as running the circulatory system, digestive system, biochemistry etc. These programs are set to operate at their default settings (the programs we inherit from our parent’s chromosomes, DNA, or while in the uterus). These programs are not always perfect and sometimes something happens during production (of our body) and we are born with some deficiencies – which we can correct or learn to compensate for.

v The s/c does not think, or reason on it’s own (but it does process and store information). It does not have an opinion or emotion (though it uses emotion). The conscious mind does. It is the job of the conscious mind to protect the s/c from false impressions. It doesn’t always do a great job, especially if the conscious mind has on a negative filter. The s/c mind is like a computer – ready for programming.

v Even If you give the s/c the wrong information, it will accept it as true. It will sift through your memories, other beliefs, experiences and knowledge for supporting evidence and then create a belief. The problem is that memory is notoriously inaccurate and perspective clouds knowledge. Information can get distorted according to perspective and because perspective is so bendable, it’s easy to find supporting evidence for anything.

v The mind likes complete information and will fill in what’s missing to make sense of information.

v Perspective is controlled by the conscious mind. We can choose how we want to interpret something and what ever we tell ourselves the meaning is – the s/c records it as fact.

v Problems in our programs happen because our conscious mind is not always right and false information gets fed into our s/c. We can make changes and repairs to the s/c programs. It begins with recognizing that errors do occur in the programs and working to make changes.

v How do you know if there is an error in one of your programs? If there is something stopping you from achieving a happy and joyous life. If you do not feel at peace with yourself and others. If you have problems in many of your relationships. If how you are acting, responding, thinking or behaving is not getting you the results you want – then there is likely to be a glitch (a thought virus) in one of your programs.

v The s/c does not use words, it may use bodily sensations, symptoms or body language to let us know about our out-of-date processes. Remember that it has control over our biochemistry and can therefore invoke emotions (as a tool) to get what it wants – which is bio-balance. The language of the s/c mind is pictures, feelings, metaphors, symbolism and symptoms.

v The s/c is programmed for survival. It gathers all information relating to our experiences and computes it to create a system that will protect us in the future. Problems begin when methods of protection are not regularly updated to include the abilities we learn as we grow.

v Sometimes the s/c gets confused about what is required for survival – because of what we tell it and associations we make to unhealthy things under the guise of “need”. This is how addictions occur. We install a belief that we need that substance or else we can’t cope (and our s/c then runs the if we can’t cope then we will not survive…better make sure the person takes the substance).

v It is the emotion stored in the s/c that causes problems, emotion that is unresolved and is still active although out of date. Learning about these emotions, and freeing them from their time warp, is an integral part of hypnotherapy.

v The s/c can not comprehend negative attitudes. It does not understand “not” so it will not process it. In order to not do something, the mind has to do it first in order to know what it is not to do.

v Parental influences are a main factor in causing our initial belief systems. We can maintain those belief systems or change them.

v Relationship difficulties, panic attacks, blushing, bowel problems, public speaking and performance anxiety all focus on the need for control.

v Whatever you pay attention to, you always find more.

v A suggestion cannot impose itself on the s/c mind against the will of the conscious mind. Your conscious mind has the power to reject the suggestion.

Default The Difference between the Conscious and Unconscious Mind

    The Conscious and Unconscious

The following is an explanation of the differences between the conscious and unconscious mind. After you read this, you?ll have a better understanding of the unconscious and why, in my work, I choose to work with both.

The conscious mind is only aware of 7 + or ? bits of information at a time.
The unconscious mind is aware of everything else.

The conscious mind is sequential. It likes logical order.
The unconscious mind processes simultaneously. It multitasks.

The conscious mind is logical. It likes things to make sense ? have a reason.
The unconscious mind is intuitive and can make associations of information easily.

The conscious mind is linear thinking. It thinks in terms of cause-effect.
The unconscious mind makes associations and connections between many thoughts, ideas and feelings.

The conscious mind seeks answers to ?why??
    The unconscious mind knows why.

The conscious mind does your intellectual thinking. Is responsible for your self-talk.
Your unconscious mind does your perceiving and feeling.

Your conscious mind is associated with the waking, thinking state.
The unconscious mind is associated with the dreaming (including day dreaming), reflecting, meditating and sleeping state.

The conscious can voluntarily move parts of your body.
The unconscious can involuntarily move parts of your body.

Your conscious mind is only aware of the now.
Your unconscious mind is unlimited in time and space. It holds all your memories and future constructs.

The conscious mind seeks understanding of problems and reasons that if it understands them, it can make them go away.
Your unconscious mind decides what it will do about it. It can forget (amnesia), distort (make false associations) or break connections (get over it).

    The conscious mind is deliberate.
    The unconscious mind is automatic.

The conscious mind is verbal (including self-talk).
The unconscious mind is nonverbal (feeling).

    The conscious mind is analytical.
    The unconscious mind is literal.

The conscious mind is the place of cognitive learnings and understandings.
The unconscious mind is the place of experiential learnings.

Your conscious mind uses the intellect to come up with logical solutions for problems.
Your unconscious mind can access internal resources from memories of experiences, linking them all together - creating a resourceful state.

Your conscious mind will tell you when your right because the facts line up.
Your unconscious mind will tell you when you are right because it will feel right.

Your conscious mind has limited focus.
Your unconscious mind has unlimited focus.

Default Things to know about ourselves

Things to Know about Yourself and Others

    1. People do what works, and that is usually something that is easiest and immediate to implement. Unfortunately it’s not always something that is beneficial in the long run. For example: getting drunk when you get stressed. You are looking to avoid the stress feeling and getting drunk is easy and immediate. It isn’t anything that is helpful though, in the long run.

    2. People do what’s familiar. People will usually choose the “devil they know” than the unknown path.

    3. We teach others how to treat us. If someone gets the response they want from you, they will repeat the method. For example, if your mother gets you to call her by making you feel guilty, then she will continue to try to make you feel guilty to get you to call her.

    4. Your mind will create the reality that you are thinking about. It always goes toward and doesn’t understand “away”. That’s why many people tend to get what they don’t want. They create self-fulfilling prophecies.

    5. People often feel hurt by another’s actions because of the “perceived” (hurtful) intention.

    6. You can be brainwashing yourself by negative self-talk when you are upset. One of the ways brainwashing works is by giving suggestions to someone when they are upset. Another way is repetition. When you are upset and telling yourself negative things, you are implanting those ideas in you mind. Truth is irrelevant to belief.

    7. Getting lots of rest builds strength of mind.

    8. Prolonged stress can alter your body chemistry bringing on depression, anxiety, irritability. Prolonged stress weakens the Will and makes the individual suggestible.

    9. Habits are formed by repetition. Old habits are broken by using new habits. Neuro-pathways are similar to paths in a forest – with frequent use, the become well defined and easy to access. When they are rarely used, the pathway gets fainter and eventually disappears.

    10. Learning and change take place in the subconscious mind.

    11. Suggestions work best when you are ready for change.

    12. Inner strength is self-reinforcing.

    13. Emotions and thoughts have a profound affect on your brain chemistry (neuro-chemical responses).

    14. Denial occurs when you lie to yourself. You lie to yourself when you ignore your inner voice of truth and pretend that we don’t hurt our bodies and minds with destructive behaviors and habits. Denial – keeping family secrets and turning a blind eye to abuse (animal abuse, elder abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, self abuse etc.). Ignoring unpleasant things that we could do something about.

    15. Self-awareness opens the door to change and growth. Becoming aware of your thoughts is a good start. Pay attention to the tone of voice you use with yourself. Is it kind, wise, loving or scolding, criticizing and nagging? What specifically are you saying to yourself. (Write it down and bring to session.)

    16. Change all negative thoughts to positive thoughts immediately. Repetitive negative thoughts are self-hypnotic …so are positive thoughts.

    17. Boredom is conducive to destructive thought patterns. People who have nothing better to do begin to obsess about themselves, usually in a negative way. Boredom is a chosen state of mind, you could just as easily choose to occupy yourself with a variety of enjoyable and/or productive activities.

    18. Bored people are boring – they are busy waiting for someone else to entertain them. They are refusing to accept responsibility for creating their own hell.

    19. It takes two weeks to permanently change a behavior.

    Great posts, Marisa!

I've spent a great deal of time pondering the implications of much of this on our 'free will'.

Given that our conscious is always acting somewhat after the event, that is to say, working only with material the sub-conscious has already had a go at, it could be said that the only free will we have is to decide what we think about what we've just done.

Retraining the subconscious to deal with things differently gives us some possibility of changing future outcomes, but it is only after the new 'program' has been tried that we will know if it leads to the hoped-for results.

Our 'animal' lives in the now, our 'sentience' is a master of hindsight.

    Cheers,
    Craig

Yes, no and sort of. Yes, everything that we become conscious of (aware of) likely has passed through the u/c (which brings up any associated data).

I disagree with you about free will. IMHO, Free will is our conscious choice on how to act or react. Our conscious mind decides what information is important and the subconscious takes that information and processes it.

So - for example - Let's say you get bit by a dog. Your u/c processes the association of pain and fear with dog. The next time you see a dog, your u/c brings up the "dog program" and you will likely feel fear. Whether you run away screaming from the dog or stay and work through the fear is a conscious decision.

Your u/c may tell you to beat someone over the head because they annoy you. Your conscious mind (and free will) can deny that impulse. It's only when we think we do not have control and we have to go along with what pops into our minds that we get into big, big trouble.

I agree. I also think that it's important to understand the power of the conscious mind and what can be done with that because what the conscious mind allows in to the u/c also determines what we will believe. The u/c takes that information the conscious gives it as truth and it then will create a "program" that supports that truth.

The "now" is what we perceive it to be.

Would you like to have some fun with this subject?

Before I elaborate on my views, I'd like you to do an experiment.

Throughout the day, as soon as you complete a task, come to a complete stop - motionless. Do not move again until you have a fully formed "I will..." statement in the foremost of your consciousness.

Once you have this statement fully formed, execute it.

Take careful note of everything you decided to do, and what you have done.

    Enjoy your day!

    Cheers,
    Craig

Mmmmyeah - a bit of that, a bit of Kant, a bit of Buddhism, a bit of physics and probably some bits from sources I've forgotten about.
