Thread: Scratchy Noise during ThoughtStream enabled sessions

Default Scratchy Noise during ThoughtStream enabled sessions

    Dear All,

I've successfully connected the Proteus to the ThoughtStream and everything works. However, during the session (with the headphones plugged into the Proteus jack output) I hear a recurrent scratchy noise (like when a CD is scratched) overlaying the normal binaural beats. This only happens when the GSR is connected to the Proteus.

Although one can get used to it, I suspect this is not "normal" and wondered how it can be helped.

    Thanks for any input.

    Regards,
    Wim.

    Hi Wim;

You wrote GSR but did you mean the Thoughtstream? (GSR stands for Galvanic Skin Response) as in "GSR Sensor". The TS uses a GSR sensor - are you plugging the sensor into the Proteus or are you connecting the TS and Proteus together using the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable?

    Hello Andy,

    Thank You for your response.

It only happens when the Proteus is connected with the ThoughtStream using the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable.

It goes without saying I plugged the sensor in the ThoughtSteam.

    Regards,
    Wim.

    Ok, thanks for your answer.

It's tough to diagnose this without being able to hear the sound you describe.

Are you able to try some experimenting to see if the sound comes and goes when using the equipment in various ways?

Does the sound go away when you turn the volume lower on the Proteus?
Does it make the sound on all programs?
Does it make the sound when running on batteries AND when using the AC adapter?
Does the sound happen when you wiggle the patch cable?
Does the sound happen when you wiggle the headphone cable?
Does the sound happen when you turn off the LED screen on the Proteus? (press the bottom (select) button while running)

Let me know if there's scenarios where the sound is there and when it's not there.

    -Andy.

    Dear Andy,

    Thanks for your concern.
Here the answers to your questions.

    >It's tough to diagnose this without being able to hear the sound you describe.

It like a one-second repetitive scratchy sound, something like "skre-skre skre-skre skre-skre" and so forth.

    >Are you able to try some experimenting to see if the sound comes and goes when using the equipment in various ways?

Yes I tried before contacting You.

    >Does the sound go away when you turn the volume lower on the Proteus?

Yes, but then all sounds fade and it stays in the background as a function of the dial-setting.

    >Does it make the sound on all programs?

    Yes.

    >Does it make the sound when running on batteries AND
    when using the AC adapter?

    Yes.

    >Does the sound happen when you wiggle the patch cable?

No. It stays irrespective of that. Of course, the moment the patch cable is pulled out of the TS it is gone.

    >Does the sound happen when you wiggle the headphone cable?

No. It stays irrespective of that.

    >Does the sound happen when you turn off the LED screen on the Proteus? (press the bottom (select) button while running)

    Stays irrespective of screen status.

    Thanks !

    Best regards,
    Wim.

Is the Proteus in "Digital" mode? You should have it in Digital mode to control Proteus Sessions with the TS. You also need to make sure you have TS-controllable sessions in the Proteus.

    From the manual:
    Middle Decimal point:
If the middle decimal point is flashing this indicates that
the Proteus is in digital input mode. Any signal from the
?AUX? jack is routed to the serial communication port and is
blocked from the audio path. Use this mode when connecting
to a computer or ThoughtStream. If the middle decimal
point is not flashing this indicates that the Proteus is in
analog input mode, and signals from the ?AUX? jack are
routed to the audio circuitry and heard through the headphones.
To toggle between these two states press the top and
bottom buttons at the same time. You can only do this
while in the ?Pxx?, ?Uxx? and ?USr? modes. The ?PC? and ?dL?
modes default to the ?Digital? input mode while the ?AS? mode
    defaults to ?Analog? input mode.

    Dear Andy,

    Problem solved !

My Proteus was running TS-controllable sessions, but indeed the middle point was not flashing. Now it does and the background noise is gone.

    Thanks !

    Best Regards,
    Wim.
