40hz gamma stimulation for lucid dreaming?
Hi,
could it be possible to stimulate lucid dreams via gamma-binaural beats of 40hz?
Whats needed is a program for the Procyon f.e. which starts 4,5-5 hours after going to sleep with a sequence of 1-2 minutes 40hz gamma-binaural beats, maybe every 20 minutes. For my understanding its not neccessary to start exactly with a rem-phase. When there is a 40hz frequenz every 15-20 minutes the chance should be big enough to hit a rem-phase. If not, nothing bad would happen (maybe become lucid while deep sleep). The question is, if a soundtrigger would have the same effect as triggering with electrical impulses? The other question is, if its possible to create 40hz binaural beats? Whould there be a resulting brain-frequency of 40 hz when putting on one ear 80hz and on the other 120 f.e.?

The structure of binaural beats breaks down at intervals above 30hz or so. This is because binaural beats are really 'dissonance'. Dissonance as heard by the ear recognizes the interval between notes. Below 30hz the interval is heard as a 'out of tune' unison. Beyond 30 hz they are heard as two tones in the relationship of at least a minor second, ie half step.
This from Gerald Oster's research:
If the interval between frequencies is made
smaller, very slow beats can be produced, down
to about on per second, to perceive. Rapids
beats, up to about 30 hertz, are heard as
roughness superimposed on the sound, rather
like a Scotsman’s burr. With still greater
intervals beats are not heard; the two tones are
perceived separately.

It is highly unlikely that a sound trigger would have the same effect as electrical stimulus. That is not to say that sound triggers can't work. I know for a fact they can. I had lucid dreams induced last week from a cricket outside my window.
You may want to look into the Foc.us tDCS device. I am working with it. They have incorporated features to reproduce the results of this study.

Hello Scott,
Thanks again for your detailed answer. So producing 25 Hz could work?
I am really interested in a tDCS device, can you recommend one? Is there one still available?

Hello Sven,
Binaural beats can be produced at 25hz, yes.
Foc.us is a trade name and website where you can find more information.

Hi Scott,
the lucid dream kit from foc.u looks very interesting. Are you satisfied with the device? The price looks ok.
I have some experiences with lucid dreaming but want to improve it.

Yes, I think they have put a lot of effort into the design and safety of the Foc.us device. The moovs gel electrodes are really convenient too. I see they are offering sleep masks and the lucid dreaming package as you mention. They are just now moving out of the 'developer's edition' into the retail one, so I have seen a lot of changes over the months. All improvements.
I haven't worn this unit to sleep yet but am gearing up for it. I have been taking baseline sleep readings for the last week or so with the Zeo device. That will let me know what the effect is.
I also recommend that you look into the LucidScribe program. It has a lot of options for devices and triggers. Free and really nice.
