AudioStrobe and ColorSets on the Kasina

Rate this Entry
The Kasina is a top quality AudioStrobe decoder. Besides being very accurate it also has a number of tricks up its sleeve to provide more variety for AudioStrobe material. The Kasina includes a set of color mapping algorithms called ColorSets. Let's briefly review them.

For the most accurate 'as programmed' AudioStrobe display, you will want to use ColorSet 8.R/G. Almost all AudioStrobe systems use Red and Green LEDs and the pan position controls which color is shown and its intensity. ColorSet 8 reproduces this.

For different mappings of the colors but still using the pan position to switch colors try: ColorSet 9.R/B for Red and Blue and ColorSet 10.G/B for Green and Blue. The combination of Green and Blue is a very different experience and is generally quite softer and more tranquil.

The first ColorSets up to 7 map the pan position of the AudioStrobe signal to the left and right eyes in the Kasina glasses. This is what the L/R designation means.

The results can be quite a bit different than what was originally programmed on existing sessions. Or it can be quite powerful for easily creating 'alternating' sessions when programming yourself.

If the AS signal is panned hard left, then only the left eye is on at full intensity. If panned hard right then only the right eye is on. At the middle position both left and right eyes are at their full intensity. There should be no discernible difference in brightness between the LEDs in their mid position and that same LED in its 'on' channel when hard panned.

At 'in between' values the opposite channel LEDs are gradually increased/decreased in brightness until they reach the mid point where they are on at full intensity to the extreme end of the pan position where they are off. It is an effect very similar to how the pan control works on any audio player.

Note however that LEDs have a logarithmic brightness response so they will go to 'perceptible' full intensity rather quickly. In practice this means that they will stay bright for a greater range of settings and then quickly dim at a short range and before turning off.

ColorSet 1.RGB-L/R
- flashes all of the LEDs together with the pan of the AS signal controlling the intensity of the signal in the left and right eyes.

The ColorSets 1 - 7 alternate between pairs of colors and a single color.

ColorSet 2.R-L/R is only the Red LEDs - mapped to pan position left and right.

ColorSet 3.RG-L/R are the Red and Green LEDs. They always fire together with the pan position of the AS signal determining the brightness between the eyes. A very different effect from ColorSet 8.

ColorSet 4.G-L/R is only the Green LEDs - mapped to pan position left and right.

ColorSet 5.GB-L/R are the Green and Blue LEDs. They always fire together with the pan position of the AS signal determining the brightness between the eyes. A very different effect from ColorSet 10.

ColorSet 6.B-L/R is only the Blue LEDs - mapped to pan position left and right.

ColorSet 7.RB-L/R are the Red and Blue LEDs. They always fire together with the pan position of the AS signal determining the brightness between the eyes. A very different effect from ColorSet 9.

Try these color sets on existing AudioStrobe material for new adventures.

Thank you Neuroasis for such a helpful description of the color sets! I am realy enjoying my old audiostrobe cds ,it be great to switch back and forth between the color sets. Maybe the up or right direction button.

In session playback mode the up button switches between AudioStrobe/SpectraStrobe mode and the Color Organ. The right button fast forwards through the session. You can switch between ColorSets in real time as the session plays back. It is just that you can only go forward through the list and not backwards. The list rolls over at the top.

In a future blog post I will give tips on handling this.

This description is really helpful ! Thank you Neuroasis , The controls work fine once you get used to the cycle of the color sets. The Kasina really is the best AVS machine with so many options and controls.Thank you all at mind place for creating such an awesome tool to explore our perception and consciousness!

Interesting read Neuroasis. Thank you for writing this. Did you write part II as well?

I wonder what difference does it make if I select one colorset over the other in my Kasina... can you shed some light on that too?

The material for the second part was later incorporated more clearly in the manual as a chart. On page 29 here.

What do you mean by difference? Like does one color have more of an effect than another?
